The fruit is called Cashew Apple. It is edible, and has a strong "sweet" smell and a sweet taste. ..
The nuts look like boxing gloves..
Cashew tree by the roadside..
Butter toasted cashew nuts and sesame coated cashew nuts I bought in Rantau Panjang...Thailand mari ma..I especially love the sesame coated cashew nut. Sedap tau!
Cashews are a delicious snack that are good for us. They contain healthy mono-unsaturated fats, magnesium, and copper which help prevent heart disease, promote strong bones, and give you energy. I also found out that eating cashews may also reduce your risk of getting Colon Cancer.
Young leaves of cashew nut plants. Just like the fruit, the leaves are packed with vitamins. Ni beli kat pasar..
Here in the East Coast, the young leaves are often eaten raw as salad or with sambal belacan(shrimp paste mixed with chili and lime) or Budu (Anchovy Sauce). I love it you know. I suka ulam- ulaman- apa apa ulam pun I makan... I especially love to have it with Ikan Singgang and Budu! Peeergghhh!
Adding Cashews to any dish is also a great way to add taste and important nutrients to your diet. Cashew nuts are mostly common in Thai, Chinese and Indian cuisines.
You can also garnish your dish with cashew nuts..... This is Sweet Sour Meatball from Ummidishes..... Ni pinjam gambar from Umi hehe..
Well, till then. Have a beautiful weekend everyone... Tomorrow is a public holiday for us in Terengganu because Terengganu became the overall champion in SUKMA 2010. Congratulation to Trengganu and org2 Ganu kite!!!
Sweet!!! ai tak penah lak nampak pokok ni...ada kat roadside lagi?? free for all ke?
ReplyDeleteTK Sensei,
ReplyDeleteMy Mama said you're obviously a city girl coz when she was growing up in Selangor, there was a humongous cashew tree in the middle of the sawah padi. She and her cousins would pick the fruits and eat them with salt. Oh, if you go to Phuket, do visit the cashew nut factory. They've processed the cashew apple into cordial too. har har har *evil laughs*
ohw my god..i dah lame tak nmpk cashew apples ni.. daun die tu mmg sedap buat ulam kan..i really2 love it..urghh rase nk makan ulam ni skang jugak..hmmmm
ReplyDeleteBuah gajus, kalau masak betul sedap, manis berair-air.
ReplyDeletevery nice posting Tk. Cantik buah gajusnya tu.
Mmmmm - I love the cashew nuts! I have never seen the fruit though. So interesting - thanks!

You probably guessed it, here's somebody who's never seen a cashew apple tree or even know what a cashew apple is :) I do eat cashews so that's a good thing. I didn't know you can eat the young leaves. I'm going to open my eyes wider when I go to my local farmer's market next time and see if I can catch any of these cashew apples.

ReplyDeleteTK salam sejahtera my dear,
ReplyDeleteYup the trees can be found in abundance in Perak and northern states of Peninsula.I grew up in Ipoh. This fruit is my late mum's worst enemy. We used to get scoldings from her every time she did the laundry. The juice of this fruit will leave a brown stain on the cloth and will not be washed away.Mengamuk dia ..habis baju sekolah kena stained. The shoot is in my opinion the best of all..buat ulam laksa and ulam for nasi ulam pergh..the best. Hard to get this in Selangor. In Chow Kit seikat ada dua tiga pucuk cost RM3.00.Macaam gold. :)..thank you for sharing my dear..lovely pix indeed.
hahaha by the way..umi tak kisah TK or any other sahabat nak pinjam gambar ke nak copy recipes..memang umi sedekah..halal dunia akhirat..sharing is caring..Im flattered in fact.
ReplyDeleteMy first time seeing a picture of a cashew tree. Thanks for sharing :)
ReplyDeleteI had never heard of a cashew apple before. Very interesting! I love cashews and they are indeed good for us.
ReplyDeleteWe use cashews in soup too. I love eating them plain or flavored. The cashew apple fruit looks like a yellow mellon. You don't know how lucky you are to have a variety of fruits in Malaysia. Fruits from Asia are imported frozen to the U.S. so by the time they arrive at our grocery store, they're no longer that fresh.
ReplyDeletecashew nut in indo was called jambu mete..
ReplyDeleteI've ever tasted it once before when I'm still a child, but the colour was red, and it tasted sweet.. nowadays it's very rarely to be found here...
Thx TK for showing us the pics of cashew nut,
